Col de Passon

A popular tour which offers breathtaking views. With the help from the Grands Montets cable car a lot of the hard work is done. The Col (3028m) can be reached by midday with a descent mostly on glacier, to the small mountain village of Le Tour (1580m).

There are two ways to reach the Col de Passon. The most frequently used route is from Les Grands Montets whose cable car rises from the village of Argentière. Take the cable car to Lognan and then take a second cable car to the top of Les Grands Montets. Go left down the Rognans glacier keeping to the right of the rock and onto the heavily crevassed Argentière glacier. This is a great ski with just under 1000m of descent.

Warning: This is great ski tour crossing glaciers well out of the patrolled areas. We recommend you hire a guide.

Traverse the Argentière glacier and track along the snow covered moraine slopes to the left of the Chardonnet.

Skin up about 750m to the Col, traversing several couloirs and then take a break at the Col before beginning the descent.
The photo shows the Chardonnet on the right with the skinning route marked to the Col du Passon.

The descent from the Col de Passon
Head north, down onto Le Tour Glacier (2850m). Keep to the left until reaching a vantage point with a view overlooking the village of Le Tour. From here, there is a choice of descents to the village.
